Educational and Professional Goals Your decision may depend on whether you want to earn a college degree before joining. If you have a high school diploma or GED and join as an enlisted Airman, you’ll earn college credits and can work toward a degree, with opportunities to become an officer. If you prefer to earn a degree first, the Air Force offers tuition assistance for two- to four-year programs across the U.S. Professionals in healthcare, law, and ministry may consider joining as officers to take their practice in a new direction. Service Options There are three ways to serve in the Air Force: Active Duty (full time), Air National Guard (part time or full time in your state), and Air Force Reserve (part time or full time). Physical and Medical Requirements Careers in the Air Force can be physically demanding. All applicants undergo a physical exam at MEPS, including blood, urinalysis, hearing, eye, and range-of-motion tests. If you have a health condition, your recruiter can advise on eligibility. If accepted and cleared for vigorous exercise, a fitness regimen is recommended before training. Strict height and weight requirements apply. If you do not meet these, managing weight may help you qualify.
